Everyone loves a throwback. Recently we took a look at the historic O.G. Hotel, which is one of the oldest buildings in Klemzig and a great example of how protection and progress can go hand in hand. Built in the 1840s, the O.G. Hotel is named after Osmond Gilles, South Australia’s first Treasurer. Recognising its historical value, PAE added the site to its local heritage register in 2000. A few months later, a development application was lodged to refurbish the interior and repaint parts of the exterior. PAE staff worked closely with the applicant, with its heritage architect assessing the plans to ensure the upgrades respected the building’s character. A key condition of approval required original stonework and masonry to remain unpainted, preserving the hotel’s defining features. At the same time, PAE supported the refurbishment of newer, non-heritage areas. The result was a balanced outcome that protected the building’s history while enabling it to evolve and remain a viable local business. The O.G. Hotel stands as a reminder that with the right balance, historic places can be both protected and enjoyed for generations to come.
