Congratulations to Aunty Pat Waria-Read, who has been named recipient of the Premier’s NAIDOC Award, during NAIDOC Week. Presented by Acting Premier Kyam Maher, the award recognises a lifetime of service, leadership and advocacy. It is one of South Australia’s highest honours, recognising Aboriginal people who have made an outstanding contribution to their communities and to the lives of Aboriginal people across the state. A proud Ngadjuri woman, Aunty Pat has dedicated her life to supporting Aboriginal people through cultural mentoring, justice advocacy and community leadership. Known for her compassion and guidance, she has made a lasting impact as a Court Elder, cultural advisor and volunteer across numerous community organisations. At Yitpi Yartapuultiku, and as part of the Port Adelaide Aboriginal Advisory Panel, Aunty Pat is a respected Elder who shares her knowledge, supports families and strengthens cultural connections within the local community. She has an unwavering commitment through her voluntary involvement with Salt and Pepper, Nunga Babies Watch, plus her chair and committee roles with the First Nations of SA Aboriginal Corporation, the State Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance, and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance. This well-deserved award recognises her lifelong commitment to improving the lives of Aboriginal people and reflects the spirit of NAIDOC Week.
