In the 1950s, a child diagnosed with leukemia had very few options. Today, the cure rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia is close to 95%. Dr. Leo Wang has patients from his early career who are now graduating high school with no trace of cancer. Dr. Wang, pediatric oncologist and Clinical Director of the Gene Therapy Program at City of Hope, has seen firsthand how far pediatric cancer care has come. But for children with certain aggressive brain tumors, progress has been far slower, and the outcomes today look much the same as they did a decade ago. That gap is what drives his work in CAR T-cell therapy and gene therapy, as well as his belief that closing it requires bringing together researchers, clinicians, and families across institutions who share the same commitment. Tune in to On the Edge of Breakthrough: Voices of Cancer Research to hear Dr. Wang discuss what it takes to change the odds for kids who need more options.
