One of the great things about working in media in local government is stumbling across stories you never knew existed... Take, for example, a flute played by a young Armadale woman born in 1908, and a banjolin that once entertained family and friends in Wungong more than a century ago. *Googles 'what is a banjolin ?'* Next month, those instruments will be played again! As part of History House Museum's 50th anniversary celebrations, local musicians the Jarrah Celts will bring several heritage instruments from the museum collection out from behind the glass and will breathe them back to life for a special evening performance. It's a gorgeous reminder that museums aren't just places that preserve objects. They preserve stories, personalities and little moments of local history that might otherwise be forgotten. We love the fact that one of the family stories connected to the collection involves a husband greeting his newly arrived wife at Fremantle Harbour with the question: "Did you bring the piano?" Priorities. š¹ If you're a fan of local history, music, or just enjoy discovering the unexpected stories hidden in our community, this one looks well worth checking out.
