#NewResearch used pharmacoimaging to explore how ayahuasca modulates social brain networks. Key findings: - Ayahuasca (0.8mg/kg DMT) significantly increased functional connectivity in the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS). - This dose enhanced the modulation of the pSTS by visual and mirror neuron regions (V1/V2 and supplementary motor cortex (SMC)). - A strong positive correlation was observed between pSTS-SMC connectivity and perspective-taking experiences. - Participants reported improved perceived social relationships at 1-week follow-up. This work suggests a novel mechanism through which psychedelics may enhance social information processing, contributing to the understanding of ayahuasca's prosocial effects.
