Standing beside one of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s original circus portraits—one of four extraordinary works that directly inspired my Flute Sonata No. 6, commissioned by Robert Langevin of the New York Philharmonic and premiered at the Cole Conservatory of Music in Long Beach, California. This sonata is a musical dramatization of Lautrec’s post-impressionistic circus world—at once sympathetic and dispassionate—capturing the humanity, tension, and theatrical brilliance of his subjects. Each movement brings to life a distinct character and scene: From the vibrant entrance of circus performers and a featured Japanese dancer, to the poetic elegance of a high-wire artist… From the psychologically charged encounter between clown and poodle, to the striking precision of an equestrian performer riding side saddle… These images, reimagined in sound, reflect Lautrec’s enduring legacy as one of the great post-impressionist painters.
