Decarbonising a power system is not just about choosing the right technologies. It is about making them work together to deliver measurable outcomes. A recent article in the CE Industry Journal explores how Aqualectra Utility - Curacao Water and Power, together with Wartsila, is addressing this challenge in practice, moving beyond isolated solutions toward true system integration. For island grids, the challenge is not just deploying renewables. It is managing their variability while maintaining reliability and cost efficiency in an isolated system. This is where integration becomes critical. In Curaçao, flexible engines, energy storage and renewables are coordinated and optimized by GEMS, an energy management system that can anticipate and respond to real time changes in supply and demand. The impact goes beyond technology performance. It enables a system that operates with greater resilience, improved efficiency and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. For energy leaders, the question is simple: Are we investing in individual technologies, or systems designed to perform under real operating conditions?
