Understanding System Design over Feature Building as a Product Manager; Three months in as a certified Product Manager and this is my journey building MentorOs ;my first-ever mock product during my internship placement at ProductDive. This product building process has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my product management journey so far. The aim of MentorOs is simple yet impactful: to help mentees find mentors and connect meaningfully. But as simple as that sounds, bringing it to life has revealed just how many layers there are to being a Product Manager. As a PM, everyone looks up to you as the “saviour of the product.” If anything goes right or wrong you take the credit or the hit for it. The developers, engineers, QA, and even the founder are all waiting on your decisions before they move. Everyone has their jurisdiction, but you? You’re constantly hovering between all of them, ensuring alignment, clarity, and progress. We’re launching by the end of the week, and right now we’re battling a backend issue that has kept us on our toes. It’s overwhelming, yes because this product has to live, and not die, in my hands. But that’s the thing about leadership no matter the challenges, you figure it out, lead through it, and rally your team toward the finish line. Maybe it’s no coincidence that I’m the first child, first daughter, first grandchild, and firstborn leadership seems to have always been in my DNA. Beyond the technical lessons, I’ve learned something deeper from Ibibo Seleye-Fubara, MBA's recent article that talked about becoming a system designer, not just a feature builder. To design flows that work, not just features that look good. Because if the onboarding is seamless, if the explore page shows me what I need, and if interactions feel natural , that’s a product I’ll want to use again and again. Resisting the urge to add all product feature ideas from the backlog and focusing on perfecting user flows that actually work! This process has been challenging, humbling, and rewarding all at once. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Here’s to product success, system thinking, and leadership in action. #ProductManagement #ProductDive #MentorOs #Leadership #PMJourney #WomenInTech #BuildingInPublic #Startups
