Dazu Rock Carvings at Baoding Shan Dazu Rock Carvings can be called a representative of late Chinese grotto art, and it is as famous as Yungang Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes and Mogao Grottoes. In Dazu you'll explore the Bei Shan and Baoding Shan which contains the finest and most concentrated rock carvings. Listed as a World Heritage Site, the Dazu Rock Carvings are made up of 75 protected sites containing about 50,000 statues, with over 100,000 Chinese characters forming inscriptions and epigraphs. Here are photos of Baoding Shan Grottoes. The famous monk Zhao Zhifeng built the cave temple here, which lasted more than 70 years. Baoding Shan is a rare large-scale Buddhist Tantric grotto ritual place in China. Big Buddha Bay (Da Fo Wan) is an outer ritual place for preaching to the secular beings. Small Buddha Bay (Xiao Fo Wan) is an inner courtyard where believers receive ordination and practice. The system is complete and distinctive.
