She was told she could be anything. She became a Valedictorian but wasn’t allowed to attend medical school. That didn’t stop her. She became the only woman student at Bishop Medical School but was forbidden to practice as a clinical physician. That didn’t stop her. She became an assistant curator at the McGill Medical Museum—home to a collection of pathologic specimens. She was never called doctor by her colleagues. But that didn’t stop her. She laid the foundation for modern congenital heart surgery. She devised a new classification system of cardiac defects. She created the Atlas of Congenital Cardiac Disease She would influence other women pioneers in medicine. She was told she could be anything. And she believed she could.
