A piece of Titanic history just sold for nearly a million dollars⚓💰 A cream-colored canvas life jacket, worn by first-class passenger Laura Mabel Francatelli as she escaped the sinking RMS Titanic over 114 years ago, sold at auction last Saturday for 670,000 pounds, equivalent to roughly $906,000. The sale was held by UK auction house Henry Aldridge and Son in Devizes, England, and the final price more than doubled the pre-sale estimate of between 250,000 and 350,000 pounds. The winning bid was placed by an unidentified telephone bidder. Francatelli, who was 22 at the time of the disaster, had boarded the Titanic in France while working as a secretary to renowned fashion designer Lady Lucy Duff Gordon. She, her employer, and Lady Lucy's husband Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon all escaped aboard Lifeboat No. 1, which was launched carrying just 12 people despite having capacity for 40, a detail that has long attracted controversy.
