Over the last two decades, Safety Management Systems have matured. Reporting frameworks, audits, and performance metrics are now embedded in how we operate. But an uncomfortable question remains. Have these systems genuinely improved our ability to manage operational risk? Too often, success is mistaken for proof of safety. When operations go right under pressure, driven by frontline expertise and adaptation, we rarely stop to learn. Deviations become normalized. Weak signals go unchallenged. Opportunities are missed. As we mark the 20th edition of the CHC Safety & Quality Summit, the 2027 theme puts this challenge center stage: “Time to Change the Conversation? Challenging the illusion of safety in modern operations.” In Vancouver, we will bring together leaders from across aviation and other high-risk industries to rethink how safety is defined, measured and delivered. Not by the volume of controls, but by how well we understand and manage risk in the reality of everyday operations. We are inviting contributions that challenge assumptions, close the gap between work imagined and work done, and move us beyond compliance toward true operational resilience. If you have insights that can move this forward, we want to hear from you. To learn more about this year’s theme and submit your speaker abstract, visit https://lnkd.in/dvzzpYQA.
