This is the first time I’ve posted about Radio Oldie. I'm doing it at the urging of a friend who told me not enough people knew about the phenomenal oldies that our editor, Harry Mount, and I are talking to between us. The Oldie was lucky enough to secure Baillie Gifford as a sponsor at the end of 2024 which has allowed me to talk to some of the most fascinating and inspiring people of our times over the last 18 months. This year alone – among others - I’ve talked to Antony Beevor about #Rasputin, Helen McDonald about her #hawk Mabel when the #movie 'H is for Hawk came out', Nigel Planer about his wittily titled #book 'Young Once', to the exceptional film director Stephen Frears, who won an Oldie of the Year Award in February and to one of Britain’s most treasured actors, Derek Jacobi (below) now touring, in conversation with his partner in theatres around the country. Other people I’ve talked to include #actors like Michael Palin and Simon Williams, #writers from Michael Morpurgo to William Boyd and #poets Roger McGough and Pam Ayres...... to outstanding #broadcasters like John Humphrys and Edward Stourton, #journalists Daniel Finkelstein and Lynn Barber, the legendary #actress and #dancer Leslie Caron, #fashiondesigner turned #sculptor Nicole Farhi and the former #model and muse Pattie Boyd as well as to our very own Prue Leith and Elisabeth Luard. Most recently I talked to Anne Sebba about her brilliantly researched book 'The Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz.' In the creative arts I’ve talked to #theatre director Nicholas Hytner, #choreographer Matthew Bourne and #songwriter Don Black. There are so many more – as well as Harry’s numerous conversations with people as varied as Hunter Davies, Edward Fox, Anne Glenconner and Anne Robinson.
