For two years, customers kept asking us the same question. We kept giving them the wrong answer. Not because we weren't listening. We were sorting instruments by environment type. They were sorting by something else: who needs to be protected, and from what. One QC manager at a generic manufacturer said it plainly: "Operator protection is not the same as containment." That one sentence explained two years of confused conversations. This month's workshop note is about what we built after that. The instrument that didn't fit any of our categories, so we called it X.
