It was timely to ask labour chief Ng Chee Meng to return as a minister under this Cabinet reshuffle given the current economic and workforce challenges, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said. Mr Wong announced on Wednesday (Jul 22) that Mr Ng will be appointed as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, with effect from Jul 27. Last year, Mr Ng had asked Mr Wong not to assign him a position in government, saying he would focus on his duties as the Member of Parliament in Jalan Kayu and his role as secretary-general of NTUC. At the time, Mr Ng had also apologised for remarks he made at a Ministry of Education dialogue in 2017, saying he could have "handled the situation better".
