MSCI’s new All Country Public + Private Equity Index combines listed and private market equities into a single, daily priced index. For investors who have integrated their public and private equity exposures, it provides a way to assess total equity exposure across public and private markets, addressing challenges such as limited diversification in public markets, companies staying private longer, and the difficulty of comparing private equity returns to listed equities. While conceptually compelling, practical challenges remain, including a fixed private equity weighting and reliance on modelled valuations, which may limit widespread adoption in the near term. For investors blending public and private equities, the index offers a useful perspective, but it doesn’t replace careful portfolio construction or benchmarking.
