Biocide-free antifouling paint outperforms copper-based alternatives in international study. A new international study led by Maria Lagerström at Chalmers University of Technology, found that a biocide-free silicone coating was the most effective solution against marine fouling. Researchers tested seven different antifouling coatings in Swedish, Danish and French coastal waters. The most effective solution against marine fouling turned out to be a biocide-free silicone coating, outperforming all copper-based alternatives. The study also showed that coatings with lower copper content can be just as effective as those with much higher concentrations, opening up opportunities to significantly reduce environmental impacts from leisure boating. The findings contribute important knowledge for developing more sustainable solutions that can protect both vessel performance and marine ecosystems.
