Did you know that across Florida, only 44% of our children enter school ready for kindergarten (37% in Duval County)? If a child went to a VPK program, the percentage rises to 70%. This is just one of many insights we gained at our March Donors Forum as we explored the early learning landscape. Dr. Dan Wuori, author of The Daycare Myth, explained that the majority of brain development happens in children from the prenatal period to age three, yet most resources in education are focused on K-12 and higher education. Following his keynote address, Rachael Tutwiler Fortune, President of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, led a panel discussion featuring Stacy Baier of the Helios Education Foundation and Makayla Buchanan, M.P.P. of The Children’s Movement of Florida.
