India’s urban population is projected to double by mid-century, adding nearly 25 million people to cities each year. In the latest India’s Climate and Energy Frontiers (ICEF) report supported by Schmidt Sciences, our faculty have contributed toward a key research area titled ‘Towards Resilient Cities - Sustainability in the built environment’, stressing the urgency of targeted, coordinated interventions across systems. The chapter identifies five priority areas where research, policy, and implementation must converge: urban flood control and coastal resilience, localised climate zoning, low-carbon land use regulation, blue-green infrastructure, and urban–rural transition management. Authored by Prof. Saswat Bandyopadhyay, along with co-authors Gargi Mishra, and Siddh Doshi, all associated with the Faculty of Planning CEPT University - the findings emphasise that India’s urban transition is not only a challenge of scale, but also a strategic moment to align infrastructure development with the country’s long-term net-zero goals.
