FA student Aditi Kanodia’s project ‘Visitor’s Centre at Jaisalmer’ is among the 10 best studio projects chosen for CEPT Excellence Award Exhibition 2020. The work done during Monsoon Semester 2019 was recognized and felicitated at the event. The architectural syntax of Aditi’s proposed Visitor Centre in Jaisalmer, is established by deciphering the unique architectural vocabulary and grammar of Italian-born Brazilian modernist architect, Lina Bo Bardi. The project is perceived as a shaded ‘otla’ for the city. Using the existing plinth and gradient on the site, the building is partly submerged and partly raised with the help of thin columns. This creates cool and shaded spaces both inside as well as above the ‘otla’. Aditi was inspired by Bo Bardi’s attitude to lift her buildings above the ground to create a void below, which is reflected in the cube installation. Transparent drawers display material palette which she uses in her designs. The maze shows her attitude of vertically stacking and adjacently organizing spaces in a grid. Details of the trophy are an articulation of its structure and construction as displayed in her attitude of making. The project was designed as part of L2 studio unit, Master’s Stroke: Matters of Architectural Language’, mentored by Tutor Sachin Soni
