“We’re using science and creativity to make sure that vaccines not only exist, but that they are also equitably distributed. CEPI’s work is about democratising science.” For Dr Amadou Sall, CEPI's Executive Director for Process Development and Manufacturing, this principle is at the heart of his work at CEPI, and a lesson shaped by decades on the frontlines of epidemic response. A recent profile in The Lancet Group reflects on his experience that continues to inform this approach. From early detection efforts during the West African Ebola outbreak to leading Senegal's Institut Pasteur de Dakar for three decades, Dr Sall has played a pivotal role in strengthening Africa’s capacity to respond to infectious disease threats. Now at CEPI, his focus is on ensuring that the speed of scientific innovation is matched by the ability to deliver vaccines equitably, including for diseases that disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries. This work is central to CEPI’s 100 Days Mission and our upcoming CEPI 3.0 strategy, which aims to accelerate vaccine development while strengthening the systems needed to deploy them rapidly and fairly. As global health challenges grow more complex, leadership that bridges science, equity and implementation will be critical to ensuring the world is better prepared for future epidemics and pandemics -- and we are proud to have Dr Sall’s expertise as part of this work at CEPI.
