India's Industrial Recovery Gains Momentum Manufacturing Remains the Growth Anchor: India's industrial output rebounded to 4.9% YoY in April 2026 from 3.2% in March under the new IIP series, supported primarily by robust manufacturing growth of 6.2%. While mining contracted 5.1%, strength in manufacturing, electricity (4.9%) and water supply (6.6%) helped sustain overall industrial momentum. Manufacturing contributed the bulk of April's industrial expansion, offsetting weakness in mining and reinforcing its role as the primary engine of industrial growth. Investment Cycle Continues to Gain Traction: The composition of growth continues to reflect a strong investment-led economy. Capital goods output expanded 16%, significantly outpacing other segments, while infrastructure and intermediate goods grew 7.1% and 7.7%, respectively. The broad-based strength across investment-linked categories suggests that government capex and private sector spending continue to support industrial activity. Consumption Recovery Remains Gradual: Consumer-oriented sectors continued to improve, though growth remained below investment-linked categories. Consumer durables and non-durables grew 4.3% and 2.8%, respectively, indicating a gradual recovery in household demand. Sustained improvement in consumption alongside ongoing capex momentum will be important for achieving a more balanced industrial expansion. Overall, the industrial data indicates that India's growth momentum remains firmly investment-driven, with resilient manufacturing activity and strengthening capital expenditure providing a solid foundation, while a gradual recovery in consumption is expected to further support a more broad-based and sustainable industrial expansion.
