AI and computing increasingly influence how people access information, make decisions and move through the world. Yet women are still underrepresented in many technical fields. At CWI, we are marking the day by sharing two portraits of researchers. Effy Li works on data management and on helping data science systems make better use of existing knowledge. She says: โ€œPart of me had always wanted to help improve society, and I would like to be a source of inspiration for other women in STEM.โ€ Sanne Vrijenhoek studies AI systems that recommend news, asking not only what people want to see, but also what they may need to see to stay informed. She says: โ€œWe cannot steer the development of AI in the right direction if, structurally, only a small and homogeneous group is in control.โ€ If we want technology that reflects society, the field itself needs to reflect society too.
