🌙 Could sleep apnoea be associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD)? 👁️ Our macular research team are working to better understand why some people are more likely to develop the 'wet' form of AMD. CERA research previously found moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea was associated with an increased risk of having wet AMD, suggesting it could be a modifiable risk factor for the condition. “If this association is validated, it may well be worth asking people with high-risk early stages of AMD if they have any symptoms suggestive of sleep apnoea, as treating it might reduce the risk of developing wet macular degeneration,” said Associate Professor Carla Abbott, who co-supervised the study.
