Malaria is a complex and evolving mosquito-borne disease. A threat to life, health and well-being, malaria is a risk to nearly half of the world's population, with over 200 million infections and half a million deaths worldwide annually. The CDC Foundation is working with the Imperial College of London and other global partners on mosquito research focused on reducing transmission of malaria in countries where the disease is endemic. We also helped launch a state-of-the-art laboratory at the International Center for Research and Training in Applied Genomics and Health Surveillance (CIGASS) in Dakar, Senegal to train scientists on how to identify antimalarial resistance, which happens when the parasites that cause malaria grow resistant to the medications designed to stop them. On #WorldMalariaDay we recognize the urgent need for continued innovation, research and collaboration to control this deadly disease and save lives. Together, we can move closer to a malaria-free world.
