This National Nurses Week, we're recognizing the deep experience in assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation, nurses bring to our primary care institutions. They are often the backbone of health care, and our work in public health emulates some of their best skills. As we work to modernize the country’s public health infrastructure, our Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI) is bringing the power of data to public health assessing, planning and implementation and placing experienced data and technology professionals alongside public health and healthcare professionals in state, local and tribal health departments. Their work is strengthening public health’s technical workforce and accelerating public health information system improvements. WAI is helping jurisdictions accelerate progress on projects that would typically take multiple years—advancing many in 12–24 months. Coordinating these efforts is a cadre of WAI project managers who collaborate with technical leads, field staff and partners to support these necessary system enhancements. As hands-on caregivers, nurses are uniquely positioned to build a portfolio that translates clinical experience into measurable results.
