AI has become a huge part of our work conversations lately, and honestly, it’s become such a normal part of my day that I forget how much I rely on it. For the longest time, I used the free version of ChatGPT without really thinking about what it actually costs to run it. Turns out… “free” AI isn’t really free at all. We tell our clients all the time that AI isn’t just some magical tool floating in the cloud—it takes real processing power and a lot of it. So I figured I’d pass that reminder along here too. AI needs a massive amount of electricity and computing power to work. We don’t see it happening, so it’s easy to forget that every fast response requires huge data centers, specialized chips, and constant cooling—none of which is cheap. A single AI query can use several times more power than a regular Google search, which honestly surprised me. And while tools like ChatGPT may be “free” to us, they’re extremely expensive for the companies running them. Most free AI tools use your data to train their models, and eventually these companies will have to make up the costs somehow—whether that’s through ads, paid upgrades, or changes in pricing for other digital services. There’s even talk about bringing nuclear energy back into the picture to help keep up with demand. Who knows where that will go, but it shows how much energy AI is using and how fast things are changing. Long story short: nothing is ever really free. Free AI is incredibly costly, and if we’re not paying for it now, we’ll probably feel it later. Investing in paid AI tools is worth it—and you’ll thank yourself down the road. #TechTrends #ArtificialIntelligence #EnergyConsumption #AITools
