Protracted conflict does not pause systems. It rewires them. Supply chains fragment. Services deteriorate. Market access changes. Recovery pathways diverge. In Sudan’s Gezira Scheme — one of the largest gravity-fed irrigation systems in the world — conflict contributed to significant farmer displacement and system-wide disruption. A baseline assessment indicated an estimated loss of production and income in Gezira state over three seasons from Summer 2024 through Summer 2025: 🔸cultivated land fell approximately 75–80% 🔸grain production losses reached an estimated 1.5–1.7 million metric tons (an estimated $350–400 million income loss over two years). Some areas retained partial function and are recovering faster. Others experienced near-total collapse. Recovery is now uneven across locations. This matters because fragile contexts do not recover in uniform ways. And financing models built around linear recovery assumptions will miss what communities actually need.
