Meet Justin G., a Business Development Manager with Caterpillar Safety Services. Through their work, Justin’s team serves customers, dealers and Caterpillar facilities around the world to help build more resilient safety cultures and safer habits that extend far beyond the jobsite. What’s one of the simplest (yet most challenging) safety skills that Justin sees come up day to day? Speaking up when something doesn’t feel right. Justin shares a simple approach from the “Speak Up!/Listen Up!” workshop to make those moments easier, especially when it feels uncomfortable. Because trust is built when we show we care about each other, ask learning questions and take action when you see someone doing something unsafe. Ask if you can share your concern. Maybe the person doesn’t realize what they are doing is a risk. Maybe they are new, and no one ever told them how to do it correctly. You won’t know until you ask. And asking to share your concern lowers the interpersonal risk of a negative interaction. Work together to find a safer solution. People are much more likely to adopt a solution they helped create, so work with them to find something that is safer and accomplishes the task. Follow up to make sure they are doing it the safe way, and then give them recognition to reinforce the desired behavior. If they don’t change their behavior, ask why. Go back to step two and find a safer way. If they refuse to change, you have to get someone else involved because we care too much to put people at risk.
