As industries seek viable pathways to decarbonize maritime transport and aviation, biomass is emerging as a powerful resource capable of producing low-carbon fuels while creating value from materials that would otherwise go unused. This is the vision behind š—£š—æš—¼š—·š—²š—°š˜ š—Ÿš—¼š—¼š—»š—Æš—¶š—æš—±, a next-generation biomass-to-methanol complex planned in Finland and developed by Flying Forest. CASALE has been selected as š—¶š—»š˜š—²š—“š—æš—®š˜š—¼š—æ š—®š—»š—± š˜š—²š—°š—µš—»š—¼š—¹š—¼š—“š˜† š—½š—æš—¼š˜ƒš—¶š—±š—²š—æ to perform the š—£š—æš—²-š—™š—˜š—˜š——, bringing together biomass conversion, renewable hydrogen production, carbon management, and sustainable methanol synthesis into a fully integrated low-carbon value chain. The project will combine best-in-class technologies, including biomass gasification technology from Sumitomo SHI FW. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce: āœ” 180,000 tonnes/year of š˜€š˜‚š˜€š˜š—®š—¶š—»š—®š—Æš—¹š—² š—Æš—¶š—¼-š—²-š—ŗš—²š˜š—µš—®š—»š—¼š—¹ āœ” From 210,000 tonnes/year of š—»š—¼š—»-š—æš—²š—°š˜†š—°š—¹š—®š—Æš—¹š—² š—³š—¼š—æš—²š˜€š˜š—æš˜† š—Æš—¶š—¼š—ŗš—®š˜€š˜€ āœ” Integrated with 17,000 tonnes/year of š—æš—²š—»š—²š˜„š—®š—Æš—¹š—² š—µš˜†š—±š—æš—¼š—“š—²š—» In a second phase, the complex will also produce š—¦š˜‚š˜€š˜š—®š—¶š—»š—®š—Æš—¹š—² š—”š˜ƒš—¶š—®š˜š—¶š—¼š—» š—™š˜‚š—²š—¹ (š—¦š—”š—™), further supporting the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors. šŸŒ Projects like Loonbird demonstrate how process integration, renewable energy and circular economy principles can work together to transform local resources into scalable, low-carbon energy solutions.
