As industries seek viable pathways to decarbonize maritime transport and aviation, biomass is emerging as a powerful resource capable of producing low-carbon fuels while creating value from materials that would otherwise go unused. This is the vision behind š£šæš¼š·š²š°š šš¼š¼š»šÆš¶šæš±, a next-generation biomass-to-methanol complex planned in Finland and developed by Flying Forest. CASALE has been selected as š¶š»šš²š“šæš®šš¼šæ š®š»š± šš²š°šµš»š¼š¹š¼š“š š½šæš¼šš¶š±š²šæ to perform the š£šæš²-šššš, bringing together biomass conversion, renewable hydrogen production, carbon management, and sustainable methanol synthesis into a fully integrated low-carbon value chain. The project will combine best-in-class technologies, including biomass gasification technology from Sumitomo SHI FW. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce: ā 180,000 tonnes/year of ššššš®š¶š»š®šÆš¹š² šÆš¶š¼-š²-šŗš²ššµš®š»š¼š¹ ā From 210,000 tonnes/year of š»š¼š»-šæš²š°šš°š¹š®šÆš¹š² š³š¼šæš²šššæš šÆš¶š¼šŗš®šš ā Integrated with 17,000 tonnes/year of šæš²š»š²šš®šÆš¹š² šµšš±šæš¼š“š²š» In a second phase, the complex will also produce š¦šššš®š¶š»š®šÆš¹š² ššš¶š®šš¶š¼š» ššš²š¹ (š¦šš), further supporting the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors. š Projects like Loonbird demonstrate how process integration, renewable energy and circular economy principles can work together to transform local resources into scalable, low-carbon energy solutions.
