The merger brings together the two largest independent providers of digital book and audiobook distribution, creating a business that serves more than 4,500 publishers and labels worldwide. The strongest reactions in the article come from publishers and industry participants interviewed anonymously. One said: “The dependence on a dominant player in digital distribution and sales is definitely a significant deterioration of our position. We are very concerned about this.” Another added: “For independent publishers, this means less negotiating power, less influence, fewer alternatives and greater dependence. A healthy market structure looks different.” A further participant stated: “We consider this development to be one of the most significant disruptions in the audiobook market in recent years.” Another warned: “We therefore fear that the economic conditions for publishers will deteriorate in the long term.” The article also notes concerns that the concentration of a few large players is reducing diversity in the market, while some publishers are already reviewing distribution partnerships and alternatives.
