Carleton University was honoured to welcome Finland’s President, Alexander Stubb, to campus for a timely and thought-provoking conversation on the future of global stability. Hosted by the The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University, the discussion explored how democracies can navigate an increasingly fragmented world order — from alliance cohesion and support for Ukraine to Europe’s strategic autonomy and the evolving role of middle powers like Canada. In conversation with Professor Fen Hampson, President Stubb reflected on the deep ties between Finland and Canada, from shared youth mobility to his formative summers in Ontario and love of hockey. He underscored the importance of strong alliances in turbulent times and the need to work together around shared values and goals. Closing the conversation, President Stubb left students with a clear message: they have the agency to shape the future and their work will make a difference.
