A friend started a new job last month. First day, filled out paperwork for three hours, got a laptop, and was told we’ll set up meetings next week. Week two, still no clear direction. Week three, found out there was supposed to be a 30-day plan but nobody sent it. Week four, started job searching again. She lasted two months before leaving. ⸻ The usual response to early attrition: They weren’t a good fit or They couldn’t handle the pace. What actually happened: no structured onboarding. No clear success metrics for the first 90 days. No regular check-ins. Just paperwork and figure it out. ⸻ Most organizations focus enormous energy on hiring, then hand new employees a laptop and hope for the best. Onboarding becomes: complete these forms, here’s your email login, meet your team, good luck. What’s missing: what does success look like in 30 days? 60 days? 90 days? Who checks in weekly? What resources do you need? What questions should you be asking? ⸻ The first 90 days predict retention. If someone feels lost, unclear on expectations, or disconnected from their team by day 60, they’re already mentally checked out. Hiring the right person matters. But losing them in the first three months because onboarding was just paperwork? That’s on the organization. #Onboarding #careeristically #EmployeeRetention #HR #TalentManagement
