Cardinia Shire forms part of the Western Port Biosphere Reserve - a UNESCO‑recognised region and Ramsar‑protected wetland of international importance, celebrated for its rich biodiversity and unique coastal habitats. This recognition means our coastline, ecosystems and wetlands are among the most environmentally significant places on the planet, valued globally for protecting nature while supporting local communities and everyday life. Council works in partnership with the Western Port Biosphere Foundation and neighbouring Councils to protect Western Port. Together, we support projects that restore mangroves, improve coastal resilience, and help local communities prepare for climate change and sea level rise.
