Fantastic to see the Financial Times covering the explosion of startups in Sheffield and highlighting the founders building there. We know the South Yorkshire tech scene firsthand. Alongside Barnsley Council and other partners, we delivered TEAM SY, a two-year ecosystem development project designed to kickstart this exact growth. Through 17 separate entrepreneur support programmes, we helped 240+ local businesses to scale. And by the end of 2023, investment in South Yorkshire startups had already shot up by 41% compared to 2021. That momentum is exactly what the FT is picking up on today. Some of the quotes from the article are incredible. As Opteran founder James Marshall put it: “Ten years ago it looked like a wasteland – it was hard to find people in tech. The networks were not there. In the last three years, down to 18 months, things have taken off.” Ecosystem work takes a village, and while there’s always more to do, everyone who has poured energy into the region over the last few years deserves a massive pat on the back.
