Today is International Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day!     Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system, affecting approximately 2.9 million people worldwide. It is a demyelinating condition in which myelin, the insulating material that enables proper signal transmission along our nerves, is damaged. As a result, electrical impulses can no longer be transmitted effectively, leading to symptoms such as blurred vision, fatigue, memory problems, spasticity, and pain.     Did you know that women are 2-3 times more likely to develop MS than men, although the reason is not entirely understood? In many diseases with strong gender differences, the cause can often be traced to genetic inheritance. However, in MS and other autoimmune diseases, women are disproportionately affected without a clearly defined genetic explanation. Factors contributing to MS development likely include, in addition to genetic susceptibility, hormonal influences, environmental exposures, and intrinsic differences in immune system function.     Many patients around the world suffering from MS-related symptoms such as pain and spasticity today find relief through cannabinoid-based treatments. Cannabinoid drugs are known to alleviate chronic pain and muscle spasticity in MS. Interestingly, beyond their symptomatic benefits, growing preclinical and clinical research highlights how modulation of the endocannabinoid system produces significant anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, which are mechanisms that may be highly relevant to modifying MS disease progression.     If you would like to read more about the anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties of the endocannabinoid system and its potential in central nervous system disorders, here is a link to an insightful review: https://lnkd.in/e9NbqNt
