A pioneering service developed at Addenbrooke’s Hospital has won a national award and is now approved for use across the UK – helping up to three times more cancer patients benefit from whole genome sequencing (WGS). WGS is a cutting-edge NHS test that can transform cancer diagnosis and treatment, identifying patients who may benefit from targeted therapies or access to clinical trials. By removing the need to freeze tumour samples, doctors can now collect and send samples from any hospital, making this life-changing test more accessible across the East of England. Dr John Tadross, a consultant molecular pathologist at CUH and molecular pathology clinical lead for East Genomics, who led this innovation, along with colleagues, have been presented with the Royal College of Pathologists Achievement Award 2026 for Sustainability at a ceremony in London. The honour recognises the environmental benefits of transporting samples without freezing. A major step forward in improving cancer diagnosis and treatment.
