What if the #hackathon format could fix public policy? That question drove three MPhil in Technology Policy students, Adam Herold, Mohamad Arif B. and Xuelong F. at Cambridge Judge Business School to launch the first Cambridge Policy Hackathon, held 14-16 May. Drawing nearly 200 applications from students, researchers, and young professionals, the event brought multidisciplinary teams together to develop evidence-based policies and tools for some of the most pressing societal challenges at the intersection of technology and society. šŸ›ļø Challenges were set by both government and industry partners, spanning healthcare access, housing data infrastructure, nature-aligned business models, public sector data matching, and cross-border fraud prevention. šŸ¤ As Adam put it: "We saw the advantage of having people from these various backgrounds working on a common problem, as policymakers often struggle with these fast-moving topics." šŸŒ Inspired by the MIT Policy Hackathon and a successful predecessor event in Amsterdam, the Cambridge edition is the latest step in a growing global movement. Two of the organisers, Adam Herold and Xuelong Fu, have since founded Data for Public Impact Network, a nonprofit dedicated to taking the format worldwide.
