South Africa’s 2025 #G20 Presidency marked a turning point for Global South leadership in global economic governance. Our new Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) report, authored by Sikho Luthango and Richard Calland, reviews how the Presidency advanced priorities on disaster resilience, debt sustainability, just energy transitions and critical minerals, and where progress remains constrained by financing gaps, slow implementation and geopolitical tension. Despite a fragmented global context, South Africa secured consensus on a G20 Leaders’ Declaration that placed Africa, equity and sustainability firmly on the agenda. The challenge now is delivery. Translating frameworks, toolkits and commitments into investment, lower costs of capital and real economic resilience across the Global South.
