At Dublin's Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant, innovative sludge treatment and energy recovery strategies helped demonstrate the value of integrating Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) with anaerobic digestion. This case study highlights how Cambi THP enabled the plant to maximize biogas production, improve sludge stabilization, and make effective use of CHP waste heat to enhance overall process efficiency. Key outcomes included: ✅ Volatile solids destruction exceeding 60% ✅ Increased biogas production and renewable energy generation ✅ Reduced digestion volume requirements ✅ Production of pasteurized biosolids suitable for beneficial reuse ✅ Optimized recovery and utilization of waste heat Since this paper was published, Ringsend has undergone a major upgrade and capacity expansion. While the biological treatment process has evolved, THP and anaerobic digestion remain key components of the plant's sludge treatment and resource recovery strategy, continuing to support renewable energy generation and sustainable biosolids management. The lessons from this project remain highly relevant today as utilities worldwide seek to maximize resource recovery, improve energy efficiency, and advance circular economy goals.
