On May 18, 2026, California State University, Northridge (CSUN) awarded Aqeela Sherrills an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in recognition of his decades of transformative leadership in community-based public safety, violence prevention and healing for survivors. An internationally recognized innovator and advocate, Sherrills is widely known for his pivotal role in brokering the historic 1992 peace treaty between the Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles — a landmark agreement credited with helping reduce homicides in the community by 44%.
