"The patients waiting are not abstractions." That's how Nadir Mahmood, President Nkarta, Inc. and former CLS Board Chair, testifying against AB 1776, brought home what's at stake for the young women with lupus nephritis and myositis still waiting for treatments that work — and for every small biotech racing to reach them. He also warned that the threat of meritless lawsuits alone will freeze innovation: legal uncertainty doesn't wait for a ruling before it scares off investment. For a small, clinical-stage company without the balance sheet to withstand years of litigation — that risk is often fatal to the research itself. The bill unfortunately passed out of committee, despite significant concerns raised by Senate Committee members. As it heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee, we'll keep highlighting what's really on the line for life sciences innovation — and the patients counting on it. #CaliforniaLifeSciences #Biotech #Innovation #PatientsFirst
