With the rising interest in all thing's fitness and nutrition, I'm sure we've heard the term 'whey protein' or 'protein shake' before. But what exactly is whey, and is whey = protein shake? Here's 5 simple things you can learn about whey and protein shakes! 1. Whey comes from cows. 🐄 More specifically, whey is actually derived from cow's milk. The milk undergoes a process known as curdling. During curdling, the milk is heated and an acidic substance is added to it, causing the milk to separate into solid curds and liquid whey! They liquid whey is then separated, further processed and packaged into powdered forms. Hence most whey comes in whey powders. Therefore, whey is a natural product, it is NOT artificially made! 2. Whey is super high in protein. 💪 A typical serving of whey powder is roughly 70 to 80% protein. This means that it can contain roughly 20 to 25 grams of protein while only containing 100-150 calories. To give you a better idea, you can compare this to eating chicken breast roughly the size of your hand. Depending on how you cook it, chicken breast can range anywhere from 150 to 250 calories! That's why whey is often called whey protein because of its high protein content, making it a very convenient tool for muscle building and muscle maintenance. 3. There are different types of whey. 🧐 The main types include whey protein Concentrate (WPC), whey protein Isolate (WPI) and whey protein Hydrolysate (WPH). While they all come from whey, they undergo different levels of purification to reduce the fat and sugar content. To summarise, WPC is the least purified, while WPH is the most purified. This also means that WPC is the most affordable out of the 3! Does this mean that WPC is bad while WPH is good? Maybe I’ll do a separate post to discuss about that! 🤔 4. Whey protein does not mean protein shake. 🥤 A Protein Shake generally refers to a drink that contains a high amount of protein. For example, it can be a blend of many high protein foods like milk and peanut butter. Likewise, whey is a high protein food that can be added into a protein shake, but it may not necessarily be inside. 5. Protein shakes are useful for weight loss! ⚖️ Compared to carbohydrates and fats, foods that are high in protein are able to keep us full for longer periods of time 🕰️  Therefore, shakes can be used as an excellent dieting technique to replace meals, keep the calories low and stay full! 😮 If you're interested to find out more about protein powders, feel free to drop me a message and we can continue the conversation!
