The group was proscribed ('banned') as a terrorist organisation in July 2025; this makes expressing support or membership of the group a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. A High Court ruling in February 2026 found the ban to be disproportionate. The ruling is being appealed by the Home Office. The lawyers, speaking in support of Palestine Action and in solidarity with hundreds of other scholars, writers, artists and activists remind us that never again means now: "We oppose genocide because as academics who came of age in the decades that followed the second world war, we know that 'never again' must mean what it says." Israel would not have been able to continue the genocide for as long as it has and in the way that it has without the support of institutions, businesses and governments around the world. The lawyers make this link explicit by calling out UK-based weapons manufacturers as its enablers. "We oppose genocide, and therefore we support whatever nonviolent action might be required to stop it and to shut down the UK-based weapons manufacturers that are helping to enable it." While the UK government seeks to silence voices protesting the genocide of Palestinians, daily life for Palestinians across Gaza and the West Bank continues to defy description. Israeli government ministers celebrate a law that will allow them to execute hundreds of Palestinian prisoners without due process; its forces stop, detain and torture activists and ordinary people trying to bring desperately needed aid to Palestine; its soldiers shoot children pointblank for nothing. The lawyers made their stance clear: Israel is committing genocide and must be stopped: "We support whatever nonviolent action might be required to stop it". The lawyers are: ā Simon Behrman, Reader in Law, University of Warwick ā Neve Gordon, Professor of International Law, Queen Mary University ā Penny Green, Professor of Law and Globalisation, Queen Mary University ā Sarah Keenan, Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, Queen Mary University ā Hans Lindahl, Chair of Global Law, Queen Mary University & Emeritus Chair of Philosophy of Law, Tilburg University ā Yvette Russell, Professor of Law and Feminist Theory, University of Bristol ā David Whyte, Professor of Climate Justice, Queen Mary University. šļø Never again means today. āļø Call on your governments to end their complicity in this terrible crime against humanity. #BystandersNoMore Photo: Middle East Eye
