🚨 Ulcerative colitis #UC is NOT purely a mucosal disease 🚨 In our new Viewpoint in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, we challenge one of gastroenterology’s oldest dogmas ! Beautiful work by Elisabeth Eggermont, supported by an international group of experts across various disciplines ! 🔬 Intestinal ultrasound, surgical, and histopathological data now reveal transmural involvement in UC — thickened submucosa, fibrotic shifts, mesenteric changes — even in endoscopic remission. 💡 The message is clear: ➡ UC extends beyond the mucosa. ➡ It’s a progressive, deeper disease. ➡ Our treatment goals must evolve with it. Proud of the brilliant teamwork that made this possible — and grateful to colleagues and friends who helped shape this rethink of what UC really is!
