As England take on DR Congo at the FIFA World Cup today, the spotlight turns to one of the world's most innovative sporting venues: Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. We are proud that Buro Happold helped bring this extraordinary stadium to life, providing structural and facade engineering, sustainability and lighting design.  Designed in collaboration with HOK, the venue set a new benchmark for sports architecture. Its iconic retractable roof, composed of eight moving "petals" that open like a camera shutter, was the first of its kind anywhere in the world.  Beyond creating an unforgettable fan experience, the project also pushed the boundaries of sustainable stadium design, becoming the first LEED Platinum-certified professional sports venue in North America. Features including rainwater capture and reuse systems, alongside more than 4,000 solar panels, demonstrate how major sporting venues can deliver environmental performance at scale.  Today, as thousands of fans gather in Atlanta and millions more watch around the world, Mercedes-Benz Stadium once again provides the stage for a global sporting occasion.
