How do we design for an uncertain future and create frameworks not just for today, but for decades to come? As we continue to celebrate our fiftieth year, we’re highlighting the people, projects and ideas that shape who we are. Next in our series is Mechanical Engineer Elisabetta Maria Patanè, PhD CEng Lect, who joined Buro Happold in 2023 and was the recipient of the 2025 Curiosity Happold Award. Elisabetta brings an innovative, analytical and creative approach to engineering. Her passion lies in collaborative design, working closely with architects and clients to create buildings and systems that reflect a distinct Buro Happold signature. Driven by a desire to learn from world-leading expertise, Elisabetta split her time between London and Bath early in her journey, working closely with a Passivhaus and gallery specialist. This experience shaped her thinking and deepened her interest in complex, future-focused design challenges. From the Barbican Renewal project, which cemented her love for the industry, to developing climate resilience strategies for the City of London, Elisabetta is helping tackle some of the most pressing questions facing the built environment today.
