Carbon removal and carbon offsets are not the same. Carbon offset means you emit CO₂ and pay someone else to reduce emissions somewhere else. Carbon removal means you pay someone to take CO₂ out of the air. Without offsets: you emit +1 and someone else emits +1 → total = +2
With offsets: you emit +1 and someone else reduces to 0 → total = +1
Carbon removal: you pay someone to remove CO₂ from the air → total = −1 Carbon removal can be done by planting trees, restoring forests, improving soils, adding crushed rocks to land or oceans, or using machines that capture CO₂ and store it underground. And this matters: we’ve likely already crossed ~1.5°C of warming. If we want to go back below, reducing emissions alone is not enough — we also need carbon removal.
