This is the most damning analysis of AI that I've read so far ⬇️ Am I still salty that someone recently told me that everyone now has access to a free editor? Maybe... But is it even true that AI is free? No! Sure, until recently, lots of people have been able to use AI for free or at low cost. However, AI companies have been making massive losses while heavily subsidising free or subscription models for an expensive product while having little control over how much someone actually uses it. You might be asking it one grammar question, or you might be asking it to correct your entire PhD. Using AI as your editor is not only unreliable, bad for the environment, and risky for your publication chances. It's also costly. Right now, OpenAI or Anthropic or Google or Microsoft are subsidising the cost, but that's not going to last much longer. And as this article points out, people are going to be a LOT less forgiving that AI makes mistakes and hallucinates once these companies switch to a pay-per-token model.
