Where does Hyderabad’s water really come from and what happens to it before it reaches your tap? In this episode of Water: From Source to Tap, Hyderabad Chapter, we trace the journey of water across one of India’s fastest-growing cities, from reservoirs, rivers and distant water sources to treatment plants, ageing pipelines and finally into people’s homes. Along the way, we examine rising dependence on water tankers, contaminated water sources, over-exploited groundwater, polluted lakes and the growing strain rapid urbanisation is placing on the city’s water infrastructure. From high-rise apartments in Kondapur and self-sustaining communities harvesting rainwater to neighbourhoods in Jubilee Hills where water arrives only a few times a week, we explore why access to clean and reliable drinking water remains unequal across Hyderabad and why the crisis is not just about availability, but also quality. As groundwater levels continue to decline and the city increasingly relies on tankers and borewells, Hyderabad faces a challenge that goes far beyond a seasonal shortage. For many residents, access to safe drinking water remains uncertain despite living in a modern metropolitan city. This is the fourth chapter in a series investigating the reality of urban water in India, from source to tap.
